A Collective Action to Capture an Instant of the Danube
Invitation to Participate
The Concept
Water is essential for life, it is the foundation of human interaction. Cooperation in the use and handling of water and water resources made human civilization possible; today the Danube, like a lifeline, flows through a united Europe.
"Draw the Danube - Build a Bridge “ strives to draw closer to the essence of the Danube by trying to collectively 'capture' an instant in the life of the river. Initiated by Joachim Eckl, this project aspires to create a unifying and forward-looking impulse to promote cross-border cooperation between people along the entire course of the river.
280 teams will simultaneously capture an instant of the Danube: Close to 2000 people along its banks, from its origin in the Black Forest to its mouth at the Black Sea, will scoop handfuls of water from the river at exactly the same moment in time. They will pause to dedicate one hour to the river. Thus, in the course of one single afternoon, an instant of the Danube will be collected along the entire river.
The individuals that will make this unique water painting possible will experience the unifying force of the Danube, shared by people and nations. The action makes this force spring to life, symbolizing the common ties, both natural and cultural, that connect the people of the region. The river speaks a language that transcends linguistic and political borders.
The water collected during this joint action will later be exhibited in a giant [large-scale] sculpture.
It is a proven concept that allows to build bridges between people, a bridge founded on the essential element that is water and on the conscious and simultaneous actions of humans. The project promotes a cooperative cultural identity, both inwardly and outwardly, in order to overcome human stereotypes constrained by nationalism. This 'social sculpture' in the Danube basin is meant to examplify the European idea - cooperation instead of confrontation.
Docking Platform
We are planning a 'docking platform' along the river in order to find autonomous participants for the implementation of the collective drawing action. It will consist of a variable installation and a performance-lecture on our topic „Draw the Danube - Build a Bridge“.
Project Partners
We are looking for 24 responsible individuals and/or institutions to act as partners, playing a key role as beach heads and regional communicators along the river. They will serve as on-site motivators/inspirators, actively participating in the shaping of the event, while being fully integrated into the project organization.
We invite you to become ambassadors and autonomous co-authors of this living Danube painting.
The Facts
The Danube region has played an important role in the history of civilization, and today it links ten sovereign European states along its entire course of close to 2 800 km (roughly 1 740 miles), making it the second-longest river in Europe. 1 071 kilometers of it constitute national borders, 342 bridges connect its banks.
In 700 B.C., the Greeks were the first to navigate the Danube upriver from Tomis (Constanţa) at the Black Sea to the Iron Gate, and for the Romans, large sections of the river marked the limit of the empire, serving both as a border and a supply line.
Today, the Danube flows through a united Europe!
The project "Draw the Danube - Build a Bridge" envisions an approximately hour long simultaneous drawing of water along the course of the river at around 280 points of extraction (that is, about every 10 kilometers or about 6.2 miles), with 1 000 liters being collected at each site. At an average flow speed of about 10 km/h, the water collected in 280 one-cubic-meter transparent containers will represent an instant snapshot of the entire Danube. Subsequently, the water scooped at the different sites will be collected and gathered in an installation representing an instant of the Danube. This 'collective' snapshot will be shared with the partners along the river.
The implementation of the project will be planned by the 24 regional partners. Each partner will supply and instruct 12 team leaders, and these, in turn, will put together teams of about 7 people per site to scoop the water by hand. This will add up to almost 2 000 participants.
The Artist
Joachim Eckl lives and works in Austria on the banks of the Große Mühl, a river in the so-called Mühl Quadrant, a region known for its majestic landscape and rich history. He has organized several such 'drawings' at different rivers over the last few years. Documentation of his work can be found at http://www.heimart.at.
Additionally to over 100 projects of his own, Joachim Eckl has participated in the implementation of large-scale projects of Tony Cragg, Jeff Koons, Christo & Jean Claude, Klaus Rinke and others.
His artistic work is based on an expanded concept of art, largely inspired by the notion of "social sculpture" coined by Joseph Beuys. By creating shared experiences, Eckl generates an impulse for "social sculptures". He sees himself as a "social landscaper or gardner". Water plays a central role in his work, for him it is an essential element of human interaction.

Die Idee
Wasser ist die Grundsubstanz allen Lebens und Basis der menschlichen Interaktion. Der bewusste Umgang mit Wasser und Gewässern ist Grundlage unserer Kulturbildung. So verbindet die Donau heute gleich einer Lebensader ein vereintes Europa.
Die Aktion „Brückenschlag/Donau-Schöpfung“ ist eine länderübergreifende Annäherung an die Donau. Als Gedächtnisträger ist Wasser die Voraussetzung unseres Bewusstseins und dadurch Vermittler kultureller Identität.
280 Teams werden gemeinsam einen Augenblick der Donau erfassen. Über 2800 km - von ihren Quellen im Schwarzwald bis zur Mündung ins Schwarze Meer - werden ca. 2000 Menschen zeitgleich händisch 280.000 Liter Wasser aus der Donau schöpfen. Im Verlauf eines Nachmittags wird auf diese Weise ein Augenblick des gesamten Flusslaufs erfasst. Die Völker- und Menschen-verbindende Kraft der Donau wird durch diese kollektive Aktion für jeden Einzelnen zu einem „Erlebnis“. Gemeinsam wird ein Zeichen der natur- und kulturgegebenen Verbindung im Donauraum gesetzt. Der Fluss spricht eine Sprache, die über Sprach- und Staatsgrenzen hinaus verstanden wird.
Nach der Aktion wird der durch das gleichzeitige Schöpfen aus dem Flussbett gehobene "Augenblick des Flusses" in den 280 Container-Elementen zur Installation „Donau-Zug“ zusammengeführt.
Im Anschluss geht die zur Eisenbahn-Ladung versammelte Donau-Schöpfung von Linz nach Donau-Eschingen flussaufwärts auf die Reise. Dort angekommen wird aus den 280 Containern ein Quellgrund installiert, aus dem das Donau-Wasser 6 Tage lang als neuer Zufluss wieder in die Donau mündet.
Die Installationen „Donau-Zug“ und „Quellgrund“ sind Transportmittel und bildhafte Gedächtnisspeicher für Idee und Inhalt der Aktion.
Das erprobte Konzept funktioniert als substanzieller Brückenschlag zwischen Menschen. Ein Brückenschlag, der über das Lebenselement-Wasser und bewusstes gleichzeitiges Handeln von Menschen aufgebaut wird. Das Projekt wirbt nach innen und außen für kooperative kulturelle Identität und sucht dabei die Enge eines von Nationalismen geprägten Menschenbildes zu überwinden. Konkret bezieht sich die Vision dieser „soziale Plastik“ im Donauraum auf den Kern der europäischen Idee - Kooperation anstatt Konfrontation.
Plattform zum Andocken
Um eigenverantwortliche Teilnehmer zur Verwirklichung des sozialen Bildes der gemeinsamen Donauschöpfung zu finden kommt eine „Plattform zum Andocken“ entlang der Donau zum Einsatz. Sie besteht aus einer variablen Installation und einer performance-lecture zum Thema.
Kooperationspartner
Für die Durchführung der Donauschöpfung sind wir auf der Suche nach 24 interessierten Einzelpersonen und/oder Institutionen, die als Regionalpartner vor Ort gestaltgebend und organisatorisch die Aktion vermitteln.
Die Fakten
Der Donauraum umfasst neben seiner kulturhistorischen Dimension 10 europäische Anrainerstaaten in einem Verlauf von rund 2800 km und ist damit der zweitlängste Flusslauf Europas. 1.071 Kilometer davon sind Staatsgrenzen, 342 Brücken verbinden die Ufer. 700 v.Chr. von den Griechen ab Tomis (Constanta) vom Schwarzen Meer her erstmals bis zum Eisernen Tor besegelt, bildete der Strom unter den Römern weite Teile des Donau-Limes und war Grenzverlauf ebenso wie Versorgungslinie.
Heute durchfließt die Donau ein vereintes Europa!
„Brückenschlag-Donau-Schöpfung“ widmet dem Fluss eine Stunde des Innehaltens, indem Menschen an 280 Orten entlang des gesamten Verlaufes gemeinsam gleichzeitig händisch jeweils 1000 Liter Donauwasser schöpfen. Bei einer durchschnittlichen Fließgeschwindigkeit von ca.10km/h ergibt das (in 280 transparenten Containern zu je einem Kubikmeter) gesammelte Wasser einen kompletten Längenabschnitt der ganzen Donau. Im Anschluss an die Aktion werden die geschöpften Donau-Wasser versammelt und als Installation zu einem Augenblick der Donau vereinigt.
Auf der Basis von 24 Regionalpartnern werden jeweils 12 Schöpfungswillige gesucht, die sich ihrerseits mit ca.7 Schöpfern an der Aktion beteiligen. Auf diese Weise können rund 2000 Aktive den „Augenblick der Donau“ kreieren. Hier ist die Initiativkraft und das Interesse des Einzelnen die Voraussetzung für die Umsetzung der Idee.
Der Künstler
Joachim Eckl lebt und arbeitet in Österreich an der Großen Mühl, einem Fluss im geschichtsträchtigen und naturgewaltigen Mühlviertel. In den letzten Jahren hat er bereits mehrere 'Schöpfungen” an verschiedenen Flüssen durchgeführt. Dokumentationen dieser Arbeiten sind unter http://www.heimart.at zu finden.
Parallel zur Verwirklichung von mehr als 100 seiner eigenen Projekte war er bei der Realisierung von Großprojekten von Tony Cragg, Jeff Koons, Christo & Jean Claude, Klaus Rinke u.a. engagiert.
Seine künstlerische Arbeit basiert auf einem erweiterten Verständnis von Kunst, das wesentlich von Joseph Beuys Begriff der „Sozialen Skulptur“ inspiriert ist. Eckl erzeugt durch das Kreieren gemeinsamer Erfahrungen „Impulse für eine Gesellschaft der Zukunft“. Er versteht sich selbst als „Sozial-Gärtner“. Wasser spielt in dieser Arbeit eine zentrale Rolle. Er nützt es als Grundelement menschlicher Interaktion.

DRAW THE DANUBE - BUILD A BRIDGE
An Image from the Future
From its origin in the Black Forest to the end of its journey in the Black Sea, the Danube river flows for more than 2 880 km (roughly 1 740 miles) and traverses ten European states. Drawing 'stations' will be set up every 10 kilometers along the entire course of the river.
At a specific time and for one hour, around 2000 people gathered at these 280 stations will collect water into containers, about 1000 liters per drawing station.
Filling the containers will take about as long as it would take the water to flow from one station to the next, thus capturing an instant of the entire river course in one single collective action of awareness.
The water extracted from the river will be collected in the 'DanubeTrain' set up in Linz at the Donaulände park. This convoy will then travel upriver to Donaueschingen, where the 280 water containers will be combined into a well from which the drawn water will flow for six days until all of it has returned to the river - and with it the creative energy of all the people that participated in this project.
The social sculpture "Draw the Danube - Build a Bridge" brings together people from the most diverse cultures, acting freely and collectively in a border-crossing project. The communal contact with the river, with water, arouses man's primal relationship with nature.
All details and organizational matters will be explained and discussed in advance on the docking platform. Listening to the local residents and trying to determine their specific interest in the river is our main concern. We want to invite every interested person and/or organization to join us in this project.

BRÜCKENSCHLAG - DONAUSCHÖPFUNG
Ein Bild aus der Zukunft
Von den Quellen im Schwarzwald bis zu ihrer Mündung ins schwarze Meer durchfliesst die Donau auf ihrem 2880 km langen Weg 10 Europäsche Staaten. Entlang des gesamten Flusslaufes werden im Abstand von 10 Kilometern Schöpfungsstellen eingerichtet.
In kleinen Gruppen schöpfen ca. 2000 Menschen gleichzeitig an 280 Stellen, für die Dauer einer Stunde jeweils ca.1000 Liter Wasser aus dem Fluss in einen Container.
Dabei dauert das Füllen der Behälter beim Schöpfen ca. so lange, wie das Wasser von einer Schöpfungsstelle zur nächsten braucht. Das heißt, durch eine gemeinsame Handlung und Hinwendung zum Fluss wird ein Augenblick des gesamten Flusslaufes erfasst.
Das aus dem Flusslauf entnommene Wasser wird dann zur Installation "Donau-Zug" in Linz an der Donaulände vereint. Im Anschluss geht der „Donau-Zug“ von Linz nach Donaueschingen flussaufwärts auf die Reise. Dort wird aus den 280 Wasser-Containern ein Quellgrund installiert, aus dem 6 Tage lang das geschöpfte Donau-Wasser als neuer Zufluss zurück in die Donau mündet. Die schöpferischen Energien aller Menschen, die an diesem sozialen Bild mitgearbeitet haben, werden mit diesem Wasser in die Donau einfliessen.
Im gemeinsamen Handeln in Freiheit verbindet die soziale Plastik "Brückenschlag - Donauschöpfung" Menschen unterschiedlicher Kulturen über Staatsgrenzen hinweg. Das ursprüngliche Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Natur kommt dabei über den gemeinsamen Umgang mit Wasser und Fluss zum Tragen.
Alle Fragen und organisatorischen Details zur Aktion, werden vorab auf der Plattform zum Andocken durchgespielt und erörtert. Den Anrainern zuzuhören und ihr spezifisches Interessen am Fluss zu eruieren sehen wir dabei als unsere Hauptaufgabe. Alle Organisationen und Menschen sind herzlich dazu eingeladen sich an dem Projekt zu beteiligen.
